After MLB teams expand to 40-man rosters in September, some injured players are not formally placed on the disabled list. Without the former DL designation, ESPN won't allow those players in the fantasy DL slots. This forces Sandlots owners to carry injured players on their active rosters or release them outright, potentially losing them altogether.
An alternative is to allow an injured player to be dropped on ESPN and DL'd on the message board roster. This would allow the owner to retain the rights to the player while still opening up an active roster spot for a healthy player.

I think this is fine but only after the roster expansion.

Agreed, but the player has to be deemed out for a significant period of time. He can't just be day-to-day, he has to be out at least 2 weeks from a reputable source. Not 1-2 weeks, but at least two, since that is the normal length of a DL stint.
