The following players are eligible to be protected based on this rule:
Each team is allowed the opportunity to "protect" one expiring minor league contract in which a player has yet to earn the minimum requirements to be drafted in the bidding process. The team would then sign that player to a 0/2 contract, and the option would stay with that player (0 or 1), for example if you "protect" a player with a 0/1/1 contract his new contract would be 0/2/1, but if he didn't have an option before his new contract would be 0/2/0. If a team chooses not to protect that player then he would just go back to the minor league draft pool.
By re-signing that player to a 0/2 contract you would then forfeit your 2nd round minor league pick in the upcoming draft - as the players teams want to retain would be determined prior to the start of preseason drafts. That 2nd round pick would not go to another team, there would just be fewer selections made in the 2nd round. So if three teams decide to resign players then the 2nd round would only have 9 picks that year. And at the end of the 0/2 contract you would still have the ability to exercise the match option on that player.
I need to know before the start of the minor league draft if you want to protect a player, otherwise they will go back into the minor league pool and will be eligible to be drafted by anyone on a 0/4/1 contract. Thanks.
4th Street - Mackenzie Gore - not protected, JB Bukauskas - not protected, Rogelio Armenteros - not protected, Ethan Hankins - not protected
Cowboy Up - Brendan McKay - not protected
Jester - Royce Lewis - protected
SOL - Monte Harrison - not protected
Deez - Hunter Greene - protected
