We already do that. Once someone has timed out, if their next pick comes up and they've still not returned to make their skipped pick, we skip them immediately. That same scenario came up last season.

The Beast selects Hector Olivera 3B LAD Send down Chris Ownings 0/3/1 to make room on MLB roster Release Josh Bell 0/1/1 to make room on MiLB. I hate to do it, but don't see him getting to the bigs this year. Is the signing of Olivera "legal" ? He is an established foreign player, thus could be bid on or signed as a FA as rule 15 states. But Olivera didn't sign a contract until 3/24. Dave, BEER, had already passed on the FA draft on 3/21 and FA drafting actually started on 3/23 and Mike and Gary passed on 3/24. Bottomline is he wasn't available to everyone. Good question, Rich. I'm not sure how to take breaking information that comes out while a draft is in progress and make it fair for everyone. This time of year there are all sorts of news reports, both positive and negative about players. We can't predict when they will come out or what they will say. Olivera was declared to be a free agent by MLB on March 5, so he has always been part of the FA draft for our purposes - it was his signing by the Dodgers that made him noticeable. As for those who quit the draft early, I can only speak for myself - my roster was full and my salary is high, so I didn't want anyone else. I'll leave it to Dave and Gary to speak for themselves on their situations. Late-breaking news during a draft will always give helpful info to those yet to pick, and will exclude those who have already made their choices. Even with that effect, I suspect that most of us would still prefer to make our picks sooner rather than later. Any other thoughts about this?

I'm confused as to whether or not he was able to be signed in the bidding or FA draft prior to signing the contract. If he was able to be bid on, then Beast can pick him. However, if he didn't become eligible for bidding or the FA draft until after the FA draft started, then I don't think he should be allowed to be picked.

Was Olivera allowed to be bid upon in the bid rounds, according to league rules?

I feel like if he's an established MLB free agent then he should be available for the FA draft, which Olivera was granted MLB free agency earlier this month. Somebody like Rafael Soriano, who doesn't have a contract and is also a FA should also be available in this draft, but that's just how I see it.

I'd love for the draft to be paused if there is going to be a discussion as to whether Olivera is available or not so my backup plan doesn't get taken. I don't see that as fair.

Mike, need you to basically make a decision. I'm fine with the pick, as long as Olivera was available to be bid upon in the bid rounds. If he wasn't, then he shouldn't be available until the waiver round or regular season.
Ultimately, according to reports, I don't think it's going to make a huge difference because he is projected to be a starter in '16...and loyalty rights don't really come into play unless it is a max player, or the relatively remote chance of a tie in bidding with Beast.

No need to hold up the draft. The player was declared by MLB to be a free agent before our bid rounds started. He was eligible for the bid rounds, but no one bid on him because of his relative obscurity. He is also eligible for the FA Draft, and no one wanted him until the Dodgers announced his big contract. We can't control the timing of news, whether good or bad. Carry on.

I know the comment about Gary passing a while ago, was on the last page, but I have no issue with him being picked up here as a FA.
